Involuntary Commitments

Frequently Asked Questions

Call 911 for emergency assistance if the person is actively suicidal, dangerous, or if it is a medical emergency. If it’s not an emergency, take the person to your local mental health center or mental health hospital if they will go voluntarily. If they refuse help, contact the Probate Judge’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, mental health center, or your attorney on how to initiate an involuntary commitment.

If you need immediate assistance outside of normal business hours, contact Indian Rivers Behavioral Health 24 hour crisis line at 205-391-3131. 

A procedure whereby a person is involuntarily placed into the custody of the State Department of Mental Health for treatment. For more information on involuntary commitments and the hearing process, please contact the Probate Mental Health Clerk at 205-464-8459.  There are strict legal guidelines governing involuntary commitments. Please note that in Alabama, involuntary commitments cannot be used to compel substance abuse treatment. 

A Mental Health Officer (MHO) is a law enforcement officer with special training in crisis intervention.  Currently, there are 17 MHOs between Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Tuscaloosa Police Department, Northport Police Department, and the University of Alabama Police Department.  Each of these MHOs are authorized under the Probate Court and assist their department and the Probate Court with the growing demand of mental health in our community.

About Ward D. “Rob” Robertson, III

Judge Ward D. “Rob” Robertson is the 16th Probate Judge of Tuscaloosa County and is currently in his 2nd term.  In addition to his role as Probate Judge, he serves as Chairman of the County Commission overseeing the day-to-day operations of county government, including the 500+ employees and $169M budget. 

As Probate Judge, Judge Robertson handles many different court matters such as Guardians/Conservators, Wills and Administrations, Adoptions, Elections, and Mental Health – to name a few. Judge Robertson also oversees the Synergic Center project, a unique multi-faceted facility that is home to the new and expanded Law Enforcement Academy Tuscaloosa, a regional training center designed to support the next era of workforce and training, and a historical record digitizing operation. 

Judge Robertson grew up in Orlando, moved to Tuscaloosa in 1986, and is a two-time graduate of the University of Alabama School of Business earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration.

Prior to being elected, Judge Robertson served the county as Director of the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency. He has a background in both the public and private sector, including law enforcement, business management, disaster recovery, information systems, and logistics. He is also a veteran of the US Marine Corps.

About Leigh Ann Fair

Leigh Ann Fair is a Tuscaloosa County native and grew up in Northport. She graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School and The University of Alabama. Leigh Ann resides in Ralph with her husband, Kevin and their two rescue pets.

Leigh Ann began working in the Tax Assessor’s Office in 2003 and served for 16 years before being elected Tax Assessor in 2018. In addition to overseeing the Tax Assessor’s Office, Leigh Ann is also a senior instructor for Auburn’s Government and Economic Development Institute. After receiving her Alabama Certified Appraiser certification, in 2010, she knew instructing would be a way to assist others in reaching their goals of being a certified business personal property appraiser. Leigh Ann continues to maintain a desire to learn and, in 2022, earned the designation of Alabama Certified Tax Administrator.

Professional/community involvements include being an active member of the Association of Alabama Tax Administrators, active member, past president, and Honorary Lifetime Member recipient, of the Alabama Association of Assessing Officials, 2021 Leadership Tuscaloosa Graduate, active member and past president of Kiwanis Club of Greater Tuscaloosa and active member, former hospitality chairperson at The Word Community Church.
