Tuscaloosa County Education

Home to the oldest and largest public university in the state of Alabama, The University of Alabama. Serving nearly 40,000 students, the University offers premier academic services and some of the best research labs in the country. With Alabama’s rich manufacturing and automobile history, the University boasts a nationally recognized team of research and development industry professionals. Shelton State Community College offers Tuscaloosa and surrounding counties options for everyone. One of the largest two-year colleges in the state, Shelton serves as a top trade and technical school for our area and the state of Alabama. Offering two campuses, Shelton is consistently producing top athletic teams and serves as the location for the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission. The Fire College is responsible for training paid and volunteer fire fighters and EMTs. Shelton has also partnered with MBUSI to develop the strong Mechatronics program for students going into the manufacturing field.

Although Tuscaloosa is nationally known for its top ranked colleges, it also has many great K-12 options. Tuscaloosa County has two public school systems, a city and county school system, that make up 58 schools and serve nearly 30,000 students. There are also six private schools.

Exposure opportunities in the trade and technical field begin as early as middle school. A new Logistical Training Center for students was recently opened for students and World of Works creates awareness about career options for middle school students. High schools also offer work co-op programs, which allows students to attend school for a portion of the day and work the other half of the day.
