About Us
It is the mission of the Tuscaloosa County Public Works Department to serve the citizens of Tuscaloosa County by building, improving, and maintaining Tuscaloosa County’s roads, bridges, and related infrastructure.
The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of roads, bridges, and related structures throughout the county. The department is continuously participating in ongoing construction projects that are made possible by both local and government funding.
The Tuscaloosa County Bridge Department is one of the few departments in the state that builds its own pre-cast bridge components for county-funded bridge projects.

How to Report a Problem
To report a problem or request work for a county-maintained road or bridge, please call 205-345-6600, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please provide the following when you call:
- Your name
- The address of the problem, if available
- If no address is available, provide any landmarks near the problem area (cross streets, creeks, buildings, etc.)
- A detailed description of the problem

Road Maintenance
The Public Works Department maintains approximately 1,600 miles of roads; 1160.99 miles are paved and 433.48 miles are unpaved. The department also maintains 222 bridges.
