Driver Licenses & Non-Driver ID Cards

Driver License Services Update

The Tuscaloosa County License Commission may process renewals, duplicates, and name changes of most Alabama driver licenses, non-driver ID cards, and certain commercial driver licenses at our Main Office and Northport Office only. Driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs may not be processed at our Skyland and Vance offices.

The current cost for a regular driver’s license or non-driver ID renewal is $36.25, and the cost for a duplicate is $31.25. Commercial driver’s license prices vary according to the type of license. For more information and lists of required documentation, visit the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s website. Copies of identification documents are not acceptable.

The Tuscaloosa County License Commission cannot process any of the following transactions. These requests may be processed locally at the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (State Troopers) at 2645 Skyland Blvd E, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405.

  • First-time issuance of an Alabama driver’s license or non-driver identification card
  • First-time issuance and name changes for STAR IDs
  • State-to-state license transfers
  • Reinstatements of suspended driver’s licenses
  • Renewal of commercial driver licenses (CDLs) with HAZMAT designations

Star ID Cards

In compliance with the REAL-ID Act of 2005, the STAR ID (or an unexpired U.S. passport or other approved form of identification) is required to board all commercial aircraft for domestic flights or to enter federal facilities that require identification.

STAR ID issuance and name changes must be processed at Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Offices only. However, renewals and duplicates of STAR IDs may be processed at the Tuscaloosa County License Commission’s Main Office and Northport Office.

The only Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Office in Tuscaloosa County is located at the address below. If you live in Tuscaloosa County, please address any questions regarding STAR ID cards directly to ALEA at (659) 676-1220.

To purchase a STAR ID, the following documentation is required. A list of acceptable documents may be viewed on ALEA’s website.

  • Valid Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card
  • Proof of Identity and Date of Birth
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • 2 Proof of Address Items
  • If the applicant’s name has changed from the document presented, official documents verifying the name change will be required.

Please note that your current driver license or non-driver ID may not be used as proof of address.

The cost of a STAR ID is the same as a regular driver license or non-driver ID:

  • $36.25 for regular Alabama licenses and non-driver ID cards
  • $41.25 for out-of-state transfers
  • $31.25 for duplicates

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency suggests changing to the STAR ID at the time of your driver’s license or non-driver ID card renewal, but you may do so anytime. Please be aware, however, that if you change your regular driver’s license or non-driver ID to a STAR ID outside of the renewal period (up to 6 months prior to the expiration date), your STAR ID will be processed as a duplicate, and your expiration date will be the same as the one on your current driver’s license or non-driver ID card.
