About Us
We are the Tuscaloosa County Tax Collector’s office. In addition to collecting, investing, and disbursing the taxes, we account for the tax money or taxable property and provide budget projection services for relevant agencies. We perform these duties as a service to the public and to assist public agencies in accordance with the Code of Alabama. We strive to achieve these goals in a courteous, efficient, and accurate manner. The staff will assist you in:
- Paying your property tax
- Obtaining information regarding recent prior year property taxes
- Outlining tax sale information
Date | Event |

October 1st | Property taxes are due. |
November 15th | Mortgage Company escrow payments are due. We do not mail mortgage companies tax notices. They are sent electronically. |
December 31st | Last day to pay taxes without penalties or interest. We do take a postmark of Dec 31st. |
January 1st | Taxes are delinquent and penalties will be added. The department sends out delinquent tax notices to those who have not paid. |
March 15th | After this date, personal checks are no longer accepted as a form of payment.
You must pay by cash or money order. |
End of March | Last week to pay before tax lien fees added. |
April | The department advertises the impending tax sale online. |
Last week of April | Department holds its annual tax sale (online only). |
Paying Your Property Tax
When you receive a notice about your property tax, you have the option to pay by mail, online, or in the physical office. The physical office is open from 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, except for major holidays.
If you elect to come into our physical office to pay your property tax, please remember the following items:
- Bring your notice(s), if possible. It will help us assist you quickly. If you are unable to bring your notice(s), please make sure that you know the name of the property owner or the accurate street address of the property.
- Bring an acceptable form of payment. The physical office accepts payment in the form of cash, check (before April 1st), money order, or cashier’s check. You can pay with a credit card using the online payment service. There is a convenience fee for using a card. (https://www.alproptax.com) or call 205-263-1573.
Information Regarding Delinquent Property Taxes
Beginning on January 1st, interest and fees accrue on delinquent property taxes. The interest is equivalent to 1% of the tax per month, plus a delinquency fee of $5.00 per parcel. There are additional penalties and fees for any property taxes that remain unpaid on March 1st. Our sale will now be a tax lien online sale in April. Alabama’s law requires that any property with unpaid property taxes is sold in the department’s annual tax lien.
