Personnel Frequently Asked Questions

Applying for a Job

  • There are two ways to apply with the Tuscaloosa County Commission. The most convenient way is to apply online on the Employment page.
  • If you do not have access to a computer or smart phone and are unable to apply online, you may pick up a paper application at the Human Resources Office, Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (excluding Holidays). The Human Resources Office is located at 714 Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, Suite G46 (Ground Floor). Upon request, applications will be mailed to candidates.
  •
  • Positions for which we accept applications on a continuous basis are listed on the Employment page. These positions are opened by the Civil Service Board as needed by the various County Departments.
  • Positions for which an active roster of qualified applicants is not maintained are opened on an as-needed basis and are listed on the Employment page, and advertised at the Alabama Career Center at alabamaworks.alabama.gov.

There is no set time to fill open positions once applications have been received. Hiring at the Tuscaloosa County Commission is a deliberative process involving Human Resources, the Civil Service Board, and the appointing authority, and includes various steps such as first and second interviews, background checks and calling references. When a successful candidate is seated in the position, the job posting will be removed from the website.

A link to the job description for each position for which applications are received on an on-going basis may be found on the Employment page. Descriptions for other jobs are listed on this page when there is an immediate opening which is being advertised to be filled. Additional information regarding jobs at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office may be found at https://www.tcsoal.org/jobs.

Yes, if applying for more than one position with the Tuscaloosa County Commission, you must complete a separate application for each position. Photocopies are accepted for handwritten applications. This is especially helpful when more than one Civil Service Exam is required.

To make inquiry regarding the status of your application, you may call the Human Resources Department at (205) 464-8400 or inquire by email at personnel@tuscco.com.

When you apply, you will receive an email confirmation. Please be sure to check your spam or junk mail folder as well as your inbox. If upon confirmation you have questions, or if you fail to receive a confirmation, please call, or email Human Resources at (205) 464-8400 or personnel@tuscco.com.

Once you pass a Civil Service exam your name will remain active on the roster for 6 (six) months. If you are not hired by the Tuscaloosa County Commission within a 6 (six) month period, it is important that you contact Human Resources to let us know that you are still interested in employment. Once you inform Human Resources you are still interested in employment, your application will be reactivated for an additional 6 (six) months. There is no limit to the number of times you may renew your interest. Please provide updated contact information as necessary.

The Civil Service Exam

The Civil Service exam is designed to obtain a list of qualified applicants for certain entry level positions. Once you have taken and passed the Civil Service exam for a specific position, your name will be added to the active roster of applicants. Civil Service exams are not required for Auto Serviceman, Custodian, Cook, Crew Worker and Detention Officer (Examination Temporarily Suspended). Applications for these positions are accepted on a continuous basis.

Registering for an exam is easier than you might think, especially with the Tuscaloosa County online application tool. When you complete an application on the Employment page, you will be asked to schedule an examination date before you are able to submit the application. If you do not have a computer or smart phone available, you may schedule a time to take the exam by phone at (205) 464-8400 or you may drop off a completed paper application with Human Resources located at 714 Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, Suite G46 (Ground Floor).

We understand that situations arise that are beyond our control. If this happens, please call Human Resources at (205) 464-8400 to reschedule your exam.

Once you have passed a Civil Service examination, your name will be placed on the active roster of applicants for that position. When a position becomes available in a department, the Civil Service Board will provide a list of candidates to the appointing authority for consideration.

If you do not receive a passing score, you may retake the exam three months from the previous exam. You may retake the exam one time to improve your score.
