The Probate Judge is elected by the people of Tuscaloosa County and is recognized in a special category, because the Probate Judge has legal functions, as well as many political and administrative roles.
The Code of Alabama 1975 and its supplements contain the general statutory provision affecting the Probate Office. The State Legislature has passed many local acts and general acts affecting the Office of the Judge of Probate.

How can I change my name?
Adults 19 and over may complete a Request to Change Name form online and file in the Probate Office. You must be a resident of Tuscaloosa County. An Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA)/FBI background check will be required on all name changes except marriage/divorce changes or minor corrections on birth certificates or other Alabama government IDs.
I have a loved one who recently passed away. How can I open an estate?
It is recommended that you consult with an attorney to determine if an estate needs to be opened, and if so, prepare the documents needed to file with the court. While filing requirements are the same, many cases may differ depending upon the nature of the case.

What can I do if I believe someone needs treatment for a mental illness?
Call 911 for emergency assistance if the person is actively suicidal, dangerous, or if it is a medical emergency. If it is not an emergency, take the person to your local mental health center or mental health hospital if he or she will go voluntarily. If the person refuses help, and you believe they are a danger to themselves or others, contact the Probate Judge’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, or a mental health center on how to initiate an involuntary commitment proceeding.
How do I become a notary?
To become a Notary Public in Tuscaloosa County, you may click the link https://alpja.org/ to complete a notary application and complete the required training course.
My fiancé and I would like to get married. What steps do we need to take to accomplish this?
Visit the Alabama Department of Public Health’s website to fill out the certificate of marriage and print. Couples are to complete and sign before a notary public the Alabama Certificate of Marriage form, ADPH-HS50. Once the form is completed, it is to be brought to the Probate Office for recording within 30 days from the last date signed by either spouse. The Office of Probate Judge does not offer notary services for marriage certificates. A ceremony is optional. Minimum age requirement is 16 years of age. Anyone under 18 years of age requires the consent of a parent or legal guardian. The cost of recording is $75.00. Cash or Visa/Mastercard. No Refunds.
